Taos Shopping

When you go shopping in Taos, New Mexico, don't expect to spend much time in one of the local shopping malls. There aren't any! This place is all about unique, one of a kind works of art, tapestries, sculpture, pottery, and jewelry as in silver and jade. Yes, if you wander about the Taos Plaza you'll find T-shirts and knick-knacks to take home to the kids. But serious shoppers here are looking for one of two things: works of art or sporting equipment. With more than 50 art galleries and studios within a short walk of the plaza, your hunger for Southwestern art, Native American art, contemporary art, and every other kind of art won't go unanswered. The really upscale galleries are north of the plaza on Bent Street. Of course, you can buy running shoes, jogging shorts, and sweats here too. And, there's plenty of winter sports equipment as well. If you forgot your toothbrush there are drugstores. But we suggest you begin by working some of that artistic curiosity out of your system by beginning your Taos shopping in an art gallery.
